Gelato, picturesque countryside and enviable style … when all ‘this’ is over, Italy will be waiting.

Here’s 8 reaso reasons we want to go back to Italy:

1. EPIC ART – FLORENCE

Italy is beautiful from its top to its heel, and the nation’s art collections take the visual feast up a notch. Some of the world’s most famous artists are Italian and, naturally, Italy is home to some of our most famous artworks.

Kick off with the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence. The Tuscan city birthed Da Vinci and Michelangelo, and as such, it’s the country’s art capital.

Florence is home to the world’s greatest collection of Renaissance paintings including Botticelli’s famed The Birth of Venus at the Uffizi Gallery, and Michelangelo’s David at the city’s Galleria dell’Accademia.

But great art isn’t confined to Florence. There’s the Accademia Gallery in Venice, the Brera district of Milan, and the wealth of collections in Rome’s Vatican.

2. ANCIENT RUINS – ROME

For more than 2500 years Rome has been a bastion of culture, and so it continues to this day. It could take months to see everything the Eternal City has to offer, from romantic piazzas to the abundant ancient landmarks.

No visitor can skip the Colosseum (the most popular tourist attraction in the world for the second year running, according to TripAdvisor), and the Pantheon – a pagan temple turned Catholic Church, which remains both the most well preserved ancient Roman building, and the largest non-reinforced concrete dome in the world.

Then there’s the aforementioned Vatican – one of the world’s largest sacred sites (notice a hyperbole trend here?) this city within a city comprises St Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel, where visitors can gasp at Michelangelo’s heaven-sent frescoes.

3. AUTHENTIC PIZZA – NAPLES

What Naples lacks in beauty it makes up for in perfect pizza. Over 250 years the Neapolitan skill with dough and sauce has been honed to the degree that UNESCO has declared the city’s trademark technique part of the world’s “intangible heritage”. You can legitimately devour the world’s best pizza here in one of more than 800 pizzerias. In fact, thanks to the rigorous standards set up by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (aka the “pizza police”) it’s nigh on impossible to get a bad crust.

4. FROZEN IN TIME – POMPEII

Italy has the highest concentration of ancient sites in the world, and the one that allows you to most easily make believe that you’re an ancient Roman slave or senator, is Pompeii.

Caught in time thanks to the eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius more than 2000 years ago, contemporary tourists to the town can take in the streets, richly decorated baths, vivid frescoes, and the infamous brothel, all of which are largely intact meaning that you can time travel without much imagination required.

5. THE COUNTRYSIDE – TUSCANY

Mention of Italy’s most famous region, Tuscany, likely conjures images of rolling hills, charming medieval hillside towns, olive groves, vineyards and cypress trees – and you’d be right.

The area has long held an irresistible pull for travellers. Its capital, Florence, is a highlight on its own, but time should be spent enjoying the countryside and discovering exactly why Tuscany is a foodie favourite. Toscanos are obsessed with good food and wine and there’s plenty of it to be had, most notably the tasty reds from Chianti.

6. THE STYLE – MILAN

If there’s a European city (Paris aside) that deserves a fashion crown, it’s Milan.

Without a doubt it’s the capital of Italian style for its endless designer boutiques and elegantly-dressed local men and women who cut a ‘la bella’ figure. Milan Fashion Week may take place seasonally, but the streets of this city are a catwalk year-round.

7. THE ROMANCE – VERONA

Star-crossed lover or not, the quaint city of Verona is the perfect destination for romantics – or those looking for a holiday romance.

There are plenty of preserved ancient Roman monuments, but the main attraction is the 14th-century balcony where Juliet supposedly stood as Romeo declared his love for her below.

If you’re lovelorn, you can seek advice from the famed ‘Juliet’s secretaries’, volunteers who have been answering letters since the 1930s, or you can have a go at finding your own Romeo or Juliet while practising the local lingo. Remember, Italian isn’t known as the ‘language of love’ for nothing.

8. DAZZLING COASTLINES – AMALFI

Towering cliffs, pastel-hued ancient, medieval villages terraced into hillsides, lush gardens and glistening, turquoise water as far as the eye can see. Lauded by UNESCO, the Amalfi Coast is widely considered to be Italy’s most scenic stretch of coastline and its Amalfi Drive – a narrow road that traverses the high cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea – has become a must-do road trip for travellers across the globe.
